Indoor care of gardenia

Question
Hi,
I have a gardenia plant that performed nicely over the summer.  It didn't
bloom but it had nice rich green foilage.  I live in New England and have
recently brought it inside.  Since it's been inside, the leaves have been turning
a little brown and generally not looking as healthy.   I have been watering it.
Thoughts?

Answer
Hi Rachel,

Your Gardenia is reacting to the change in its environment. Even a sunny indoor window does not provide as much light as light shade outdoors. In addition, Gardenias do better with temps in the 55-65 degree range at this time of year and that is probably chillier than you keep your house. Once the heat comes on indoors, the air starts to dry out and that can adversely affect Gardenias.

Finally, you may have to adjust your watering to reflect these changes. That means allowing the soil to dry a bit deeper into the pot in between waterings.

Gardenias are one of the more difficult plants to grow and bloom indoors successfully. Gardenias are not easy to bloom because they have rather strict temperature requirements. Temperatures between 55 and 65 degrees are essential when gardenias are in bud or bloom. Bud drop occurs above 70 degrees. Bud deformity occurs below 55 degrees. Letting the soil get too dry will also cause bud drop. In addition, a change in environment will also sometimes cause bud drop.

Good luck with this challenging.
