orange & brown spots on Alocasia

Question
Hello Will,
I've been growing an alocasia for about a year.  This week the largest leaves have gotten orange & brown spots on the edges.  Each day the damaged area grows a bit larger.  What's the possible cause?  Should I remove these leaves?  What's the recommended treatment?  (I live in the Chicago area...temps are changing; the plant lives in a corner east/south window area with occasional exposure to an open window.  When the window is open, I drape a piece of bubble wrap over the plant if the temp is cold.)
Thanks for your help.
Amy

Answer
Hi Amy,

Leaf spotting on Alocasias is usually caused by uneven watering and/or letting the soil get too dry or roots wandering out of drainage holes.

However, in your case, I suspect it is exposure to cold that is the problem. Alocasias are quite cold sensitive and should not be on cold windowsills in winter. The bubble wrap is not adequate to protect it from an open window. I suggest that you find a new location for it.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.

If this information has been helpful, please take the time to give me a rating and nomination.
