cane

Question
i just got a massangeana cane, repotted in a 14 sq in pot. it is about 3 ft tall at present time. how often should i water it? and my plant is inside so how do i open the drain holes without making a mess?

Answer
Jack,

The drain holes should have been opened before you put the plant in the pot and the pot should be sitting in a drain tray. The new pot should be no more than 2 inches larger than the old pot that it caqme out of. If the pot is too large you will overwater it and it will not be able to dry out between waterings. It needs to get very dry between waterings. Plants should actually only be transplanted in the spring between April 15 aqnd June 15th when the roots are actively growing. Since you have already repotted it make sure you do not overwater it and it dries out between waterings. The top 2-3 inches of soil need to be totally dry before you water it again. Fertilize it once a mmonth with a water soluable fertilizer such as Miracle Grow. If you have more questions write again. Good luck.
