Yucca and a climbing plant

Question
I have a yucca.  It is placed near my front door.  It faces north.  Around each side of the door, there is a window that is about 10 inches wide.  That is all the light it gets.  I water the plant about once a week.  Is it getting enough light and water.  I live in Northern Florida.  I noticed that one of the leaves is turning yellow and under the group of leaves they are dry and brown.  Is this a problem or do I just need to trim the brown leaves off?

Also another question...I purchased a pyramid shaped trellis for inside my house.  I want a plant that will climb the wire (maybe with a little guiding help from me) and could sit in my breakfast nook.  It gets quite a bit of light if the blinds are open.  What type of plant will survive well?

Thanks for all of your help! :)

Answer
Hi Angela,

Those narrow windows facing north will not provide enough light for your Yucca to thrive. It will gradually decline if you don't put it in front of a larger window.

Yuccas should be watered only when the top quarter of the soil feels dry to the touch - then water thoroughly. In the light you described, once per week may be too often. In better light, that may be fine. Use your finger to tell.

The yellow leaf may be the first of many as the plant sheds leaves to adapt to the low light. Trim off any discolored leaves so that the plant will look better.

Climbing plants rarely do well or look good indoors. If you want to try, I recommend using a Hedera (English) ivy or Ficus pumila (climbing fig). However, both require good light all day long and are not forgiving of occasional watering lapses. A Pothos is a much less demanding plant that grows long vines, but it does not climb very well.
