aloe vera plants

Question
My mother has an aloe vera plant the top of the plant is now to heavy to support it's self. My mother want's to take a cut from it and start another plant. We don't know how to start a new plant. Do we put it in water or place it in the dirt?

Answer
Hello Rita,

You can start a new plant by peeling or cutting off one of the leaves of the plant. Put the leaf in moist cactus/succulent soil(mostly sand) and leave it be for about a month. Keep it just a little moist but make sure not to overwater. You can use a rooting hormone to speed things up but it is not necessary. Once it roots you can plant it in whatever medium you prefer while giving it very light watering until it's better established.

Good Luck,
Justin
