Indoor Bird of Paradise (BoP)

Question
I received a beautiful BofP plant in a plastic container that is in a ceramic container.  I really want to take care of this plant properly while at the same time insure my wood floors are not damage by water or dampness.  How should I pot this plant so that it can be properly watered with good drainage?  What should I keep my eye out for as far as the plants appearance?  According to the gift giver, my room has the perfect environment for the plant - sunny and temperate.  But I am the first to admit that I no not have a green thumb - but I do follow recipes very well.  Hopefully, the latter will compensate for the former.  thanks!!

Answer
Hi Elizabeth,

Congratulations on your new gift plant!

I hope that it is placed within a few feet of a nearby window that is kept uncovered throughout the day. Adequate light is the most important consideration.

I need some additional information.

Is the outer ceramic planter sealed or does it have a drainage hole? Is there a waterproof saucer under the ceramic planter?

Is there enough space between the two pots that you can see to the bottom of the ceramic planter?

How tall is the plant? How wide is the plastic pot?

A photo emailed to me at [email protected] would also be useful.

I look forward to your reply so I can better help you.

Regards,
Will Creed
