Jolla aka Hoya

Question
I was recently given a Jolla plant cutting. I have it in the 4 inch clay pot it was
given in. How soon should i repot? Where does the Jolla come from? How much
light and water should it receive? Does it need to hang? Thanks for your time
and expertise.

Answer
Hi Tomas,

I believe the plant you are referring to is the Hoya plant. Please correct me if I am wrong.

To bloom, which is what you want Hoyas to do, they must have a lot of bright indirect light all day and a few hours of direct light, as well. In addition, keeping it potbound and on the dry side and not change its location once you have found a suitable location for it will also encourage flowering. In other words, disturb it as little as possible.

Water it when the soil dries out halfway down into the pot. If that happens more than twice per week, then you can consider moving it to a 5 or 6-inch pot. However, the repotting will probably retard flowering for a while.

Do NOT use a high nitrogen fertilizer. Also be sure not to cut off the flowering spurs after flowers are spent because that is where new flowers will emerge the following year. Be careful not to overfertilize, especially during the semi-dormant winter period. Overfeeding causes bud drop.

It is a trailing or vining plant so it can be used as a hanging plant, if you prefer.

Hoyas come from southeast Asia, New Guinea, and tropical Australia.
