Pothos fading to yellow!!!!

Question
I have a newly set up beta tank and I added some pothos. They are of the variegated type it seems. Some, not all are turning yellow. The yellowing starts from the middle then makes it to the outer portion of the leaves. All of them are in the water at the same depth etc. One thing I find odd is that some on the same stem are fine but others turning yellow. The plant is in the corner of a room that does not receive much light. To supplement for this anticipated deficiency I bought one of the 13w grow bulbs that was heralded as being scientifically designed by some highly regarded botanist. I have been using the light some days and not on other due to my schedule. Also, sometimes I leave the light on for four hours and some times less. What is most likely the problem. Some sources I have read lead me to believe I was giving the pothos too much light. I however think the opposite. Please give me any insight you may have. I would attach picture but my fiance is traveling with our digital camera currently. Thanks for your help!--Adam

Answer
Hi Adam,

There are a couple of problems here.

The most important is that your Pothos is not getting enough light. Any standard fluorescent light is fine (No botanist design is necessary!), as long as it is within a foot or so of the Pothos AND it is left on for a minimum of 8 hours every day. Clearly, your Pothos has not been getting adequate light. Sources that tell you otherwise are unreliable, if not irresponsible.

Another problem is lack of nutrients. Pothos can stay in plain water for quite a while, but eventually they need to be moved into potting soil where they can get proper nutrients. I know there is this notion that beta fish provide all the nutrients that plants need, but that is not accurate.

I hope your fiance returns soon - I am sure you miss her!

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions. If you would like to e-mail me some photos, I may be able to provide some additional insights.
