calandiva/ kalanchoe problem

Question
I have a beautiful calandiva/ kalanchoe (not sure which) that I bought a month or two ago. Its flowers are in full bloom now, but its leaves have started turning brown and curling up. The stems have flat, blackish-brownish spots all over them. I can't figure out what the problem is or how to fix it. Can you help?
Thank you!
Leslie

Answer
Hi Leslie,

Calandiva is the name given to a specific series of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana hybrids that are noted for their large, colorful flowers. In the process of developing these hybrids with spectacular flowers, the trade-off was a weaker overall plant that does not hold up well. That may be the problem with yours.

However, you haven't indicated the light you have provided and your watering routine, so I cannot be sure why you are having this problem.

Kalanchoes need lots of bright light, should not be repotted, and should be watered only when the top half-inch of soil feels dry.

Leaves that are already damaged will not recover. With proper light and water, new growth should be okay. It is unlikely that these hybrids will ever re-flower.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions. If you would like to e-mail some photos to my address below, I may be able to provide some additional insights.
