Need help to identify two house plants

Question

new plant
I have two plants that I am not sure what they are.  One we bought a year ago at Lowes and it seems to do well, then all of a sudden it gets yellowish leaves and looks not so well.  It has a thick wood stock and then the plants leaves at the top.  The other one, is one that we just purchased at walmart, and it did not have identifying tags.  I took it's photo with a water bottle next to it so you could get a sense of it's size. I sent an email to your [email protected] email address and attached both photos already.

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for the photos,

Your larger plant is a Yucca cane. It certainly looks healthy in the photo. The dying of some lower leaves is normal and not of particular concern as long as it is getting a comparable number of healthy new leaves on top. Yuccas do best in direct sun, although they will survive in indirect light. The more light you can provide, the better it will do. Be sure to allow the soil to dry about a quarter of the way down into the pot before watering it.

Your other plant is either a Sedum or a Kalanchoe. Both are succulents and have the same care requirements. Provide lots of direct sun and allow the soil to dry halfway down into the pot before watering. It has a small root system and will never need a larger pot. It is not a branching plant so it will only grow taller, not wider, and no new leaves will develop on the bare lower stem. Once it becomes too tall and leggy, simply cut off the top portion and root it in plain water. The lower portion remaining in the pot may then put out new leaves just below where you make the cut.
