Ants in Christmas cactus

Question
Millions of tiny tiny ants have taken up residence in the soil of one of my Christmas cacti.  I have removed the plant from the pot and am soaking the rootball in the sink.  Will this work to drown the ants?  If so, what about any remaining eggs? Can the plant be salvaged?

Answer
Hi Pamela,
Changing the soil should work. Make sure that you remove as much of the old soil as possible before repotting the plant in fresh soil. If you want you can wait about 5-7 days then drench the soil with an insecticide called Malathion. Dilute the insecticide about 50/50 with distilled water.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
          Thanks
