Anthurium - Dark Edges

Question

Anthurium Leaf
You described "fertilizer burn" on an Anthurium.  I am wondering if that is what I have on mine.  My plant was thriving and blooming but recently I put those little "fertilizer spikes" in all my house plants and now my anthurium leaves ham dark edges on almost all the leaves. I will attach a photo.  Please help - I do love this plant!

Answer
Ann,

That burn could come from fertilizer or from over watering or from too much sun. So if you have not changed your watering or moved it to a sunnier location then the fertilizer spikes are probably the culprits. I would try to remove them annd set the plant in the kitchen sink with the drain tray removed and water it several times during the day letting the water run through. That will wash the excess fertilizer through and prevent the burnig from getting any worse. Clip off the most badly damaged leaves and new ones will grow. In the future if you fertilize this plant at all use Miracle Grow for blooming plants at half the strength it tells you to mix on the box then you should not have any burning problem. Any blooming plant needs a fertilizer for bloming plants to protect it from burning and to help it bloom better. Good luck.
