Questionwhere to plant sun or shade wet oe dry?
AnswerDear Tammy,
It would seem that you have been given the incorrect name for your plant. Philodendron selloum is not a vine, it has very large, deeply lobed green leaves and makes a spectacular plant which looks wonderful positioned against a plain coloured wall in the house especially if it is well lit. Philodendrons fall into two groups, climbing and non climbing and selloum is in the non climbing group.
My first thought as I read your question was that you must be growing a clematis which can have a variety of colours, one of the more popular being the purple variety. This, of course, is an outdoor plant not a house plant.
They grow very well against a trellis or fence - you must train the tendrils around the support so that they do not get tangled up in the plant. Years ago when I lived in England we had a wonderful clematis which grew over one wall of our house, it was in full sun, we watered it when we remembered and fed it at the same time as watering, that is during the growing season. But I was very young then and was not much interested apart from admiring the flowers!
I would suggest that you contact one of the gardening experts on allexperts as they will know much more than I concerning garden plants including the right care, pruning etc. If possible send a photo of your plant so they can identify it. Other possibilities are Ipomoea tricolor [Morning Glory] and Cobaea scandens [Cup and Saucer Vine] both of which have purple flowers and are annuals.
Hope you manage to identify your plant - please let me know if you do.
