plant pots

Question
I'm a total newbie and was wondering the proper size of plant pots like these, for growing everything from orchids to lilies. Are these flowers even grown in pots?

Answer
Josh,

Those pots are a whole system for growing plants in water and a fiberglass media. You need to invest in everything to make the system work or you will simply be drowning your plants. You cannot use thos plants with potting soil. I prefer standard pots that you buy at Lowes, Walmart, or Home Depot with drain holes and a drain tray under them that you can empty if you accidently over water your plants. Then you should make the diameter of the new pot no more than 2 inches larger than the diameter of the pot you are removing the plant from. That gives the plant plenty of room to grow for 2 years. You should also only repot plant during the summer months. The rest of the year you should keep the plant in the oringinal pot and put that in a larger pot or basket to hide the nursery pot. If you repot during other months the roots are not growing and it would force your plant to go into shock and might kill the plant. You are welcome to ask me about the requirements of your plants. Good luck.

Darlene
