dividing bulbs on pony tail palms

Question
a friend has 2 8" pots with pony tails palms in them. 1 pot has 3 bulbs that the fronds grow from, they need to be repotted but she wants to use the same size containers. can I separate the 3 bulbs into 3 pots? will they look bad for a while or will they be ok? what is your suggestion? the plants are about 1 yr old
thanks

Answer
Becky,

The 3 bulbs can be separated into 3 separate pots but they should be 3 4 inch pots to start with, not 8 inch pots. Each plant should be in a pot not a whole lot bigger around than it is. The plants should be outside in full sun for the summer and allowed to dry out well between each waterings. Do not overwater your plants or the roots will rot. The more sun the faster they will recuperate. Water about once a week when dry. Fertilize once a month with a water soluablev fertilizer. They are a wonderful desert plant. Good luck..
