neoregelia raphael

Question
I bought this plant about a year ago. About 3 months ago a new start came up off the main one. The new start is 8 inches tall (from the top of the soil to the center) the leaves are starting to cut into the main plant. Do I transplant leaving both as one or do I separate them at the base? How big or small of a pot is needed if they are separated. Is it possible to separate leaving the main plant in the same pot?  Thank-you for your help on Tamara's which lead me to you.

Thank-you and have a Blessed Day,

Answer
Hi Karen,

As part of its normal life cycle, the main or "mother" plant slowly dies after the offset or "baby" plant emerges. Although the main plant may last for quite a while longer, there is no reason to replant it or otherwise attempt to prolong its life.

You can leave the two plants together in the same pot. They will not compete with or damage each other. Or you can separate the offset by slicing it away from where it is attached to the main plant. Try to take a few roots with the offset. The main plant should stay in the existing pot.

If you separate the offset, put it into a 3-4" pot with a porous potting mix that drains well. Soil that is kept constantly wet will rot the fragile roots. Provide warm temps and as much direct sunshine as possible.
