(boston?) fern: dry undergrowth

Question

fern
Hello,

I inherited a large fern from the previous owners of my house. When I trimmed off the old fronds recently, I found this very thick undergrowth (~6" tall ) that is completely brown and dried out (see photo). As a beginning gardener, I'm at a loss as to what to do with it. Should I just let it be, since new fronds are still growing? Or should I prune the whole thing all way down?  Thanks in advance for your advice.

Answer
I would chop it all the way back.  While there is a slight chance you could lose it, the alternative (leaving it as is), would give you an unsightly plant forever.

Once it starts to re-flush, the fern will be ready for a new pot and some fresh soil.  Pick a container that is at least 4" wider then the one its in, remove the fern from the existing pot (this may take some effort), place it in the center of the new pot, and pack some quality potting soil all around it and a bit over the top.  Water it in heavily and watch it take off...

At first, it will need no additional water for a while.  This will help the plant root into the new soil.  After the first month or so, I would water every week or as necessary. At that time, you can also feed it lightly with some fertilizer (doesn't matter which brand, just use the LOWEST recommended rate).

Good luck!
