Can You Tell If A Plant Is Dead By The Rhizome

Question
Out of my sarrcenia, I have one that i can't tell if it's dead or not.  Is There any way to tell if it's alive by the rhizome?  The rhizome is red.

Answer
Hi Howard,

I'm assuming that the red portion you're seeing is around the crown or growing point.  This is very normal as it is an indication that your plant is getting lots of sunlight.  Our rhizomes look like that after we  hack off the older leaves.  Eventually your plant will send out new growth, which will also appear red.  As it develops, it will gradually turn the appropriate color.

So red is a sign that your plant is still alive, as is white.  What you don't want to see is mushy brown!

Good growing!
