stimulating Mex Pings to come out of dormancy?

Question
Hey guys,

Subject is exactly my question.  How do I stimulate my P. moranensis x 'Titan' to come out of dormancy?  It dropped its humongous leaves since last year and has been just 2 small spiral-looking buds for a long time now.  I kept trying to change conditions on it...watering it more, giving it more sunlight, leaving it outside where it's hot (Houston, TX), bringing it indoors to cool it down, etc. but to no avail.  They just won't grow those huge leaves that they arrived with.

Also, are you going to offer P. x 'Sethos' again? Those were just so incredibly pretty with their pink hues and I simply loved them.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Welcome,

Yes, welcome to the wonderful world of the sleeping titan!  We've experienced this problem too, which is why we haven't sold them for at least a couple years.

The best method of getting them out of dormancy that we've found was spraying them with a dilute solution of orchid fertilizer.  Use 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water.  Spray the plant 1-2 times weekly.  Just spray enough until the leaves are coated with the fertilizer.  Usually within 3 weeks we started seeing signs of new growth.  Keep up with the ferilizer spray until it produces more leaves and you're confident it's completely out of dormancy.

We won't be offering Sethos this year.  We've been focusing on developing a consistent crop of moranensis and agnata.  We'll soon have a consistent crop of a couple hybrids (gigantea x moctezumae and Aphrodite), but they won't be ready until later this year.

Good growing!
