Orchid mix

Question
Hello,
I have seen your articles talk about using orchid bark, but when I look in a store it has orchid mix, which looks like it has rocks and other things in it.

Is this the same thing?  Will it work with carnivorous plants?

Answer
Hi John,

It depends on what type of mix you're making.  But as long as the orchid mix you have doesn't add fertilizer, it should be fine.  Most orchid mixes are made up of orchid bark, pumice and perlite.  If the mix is made up of these ingredients and nothing else, you're good to go. Otherwise, you can use any hardwood bark or hardwood chips.

If the orchid mix has fertilizer in it, you can use it ONLY with Nepenthes and Mexican butterworts.  These plants will tolerate the small amounts of fertilizer in the mix.  Avoid using any mixes with fertilizers with your Sarracenia, flytraps and sundews.

Good growing!
