Nepenthes Pots

Question
Hi Jeff and Jacob

In my never ending search to provide the perfect growing environment for my Nepenthes, I have come across something called an Aircone Orchid pot. You can see them here http://www.tindaraorchids.com/index_tindara.htm?air_cone.htm~rbottom

I was thinking these pots might be ideal for Nepenthes, since they provide fast drainage and extra air to the roots.

The question I have is, would the fact that they are translucent be a problem. I grow both highland and lowland Nepenthes, in a south facing kitchen window, planted in a sphagnum moss/ orchid bark mixture, with some perlite and horticultural charcoal thrown in. My concern since the pots are translucent, there is the potential for significant algae growth in the pot. Would this algae growth harm my plants at all ? Is there any way to combat it if it would?

Also the pots are translucent to allow orchid roots to photosynthesize. Would the light be beneficial to the Nepenthes roots as well, damage them, or have no effect.

Bonus question -- what about using these pots for Heliamphora and Cephalotus?

Thanks for your constantly good advice

Answer
Hi Nicole,

These would probably be fine for Nepenthes.  It may be a bit experimental.  I've not personally used a pot like this for Nepenthes.  Because Heliamphora and Cephalotus are kept a bit wetter in a peat mix, I wouldn't recommend them for them.  The algae concerns are warranted.  I've planted some terrestrial bladderworts and Genlisia in clear containers and you always get algae.  You could also get some heating issues.

Good Growing!
