Nepenthes ventracosa

Question
Hi I have a 2 year old nepenthes ventracosa. I have noticed two little plants growing from the main stem ( roots). Ones leaf span is about 1 inch and has 3 leaves the other is much smaller and has 2 leaves . Do you think more will grow and when should I separate them from the mother?

Answer
Hello Sal,

What you are seeing are new vines growing from growth nodes where old leaves were on the browned section of vine base. Each leaf usually has one just above it on most species of Nepenthes. These nodes only grow new vine sections, not new plants. You generally cannot separate the new vines from the adult unless you let them grow a foot or so and take cuttings like from an Ivy.  Such cuttings will need to be placed in moist soil or in an opaque vase of water to root before they are expected to grow normally as a separate plant. Best bet is to allow the Nepenthes to grow the vines and bush out more before worrying about making more.
