Types of Pots to Use

Question
I just expanded my collection of carnivorous plants and was wishing to put them in some more attractive pottery since all of them are currently in dark green plastic pots. I remember hearing a comment that said you cannot grow carnivorous plants in the standard brown clay pot because minerals collect in the clay and cause harm to your plant. Is this true? If so, what kinds of pots that are not cheap plastic can I use? Perhaps glazed pots?

Also, I'd love a few ideas for some plants that would go well with carnivorous one sin a big garden. Any suggestions?

Answer
The disadvantage for using terracotta pots isn't the minerals but the fact that they lose moisture very quickly.  However, this can be advantageous if you live in a desert region where it is hot and dry.  The moisture loss has a cooling effect, which will prevent the roots from overheating.  We recommend terracotta pots for this particular purpose.

If you don't live a desert region, use glazed terracotta pots. The glaze will prevent your soil from drying out too quickly.  The disadvantage of using any ceramic pots is that they don't last very long outdoors.  During the winter months, they are prone to cracking from the repeated freezing and thawing.

There are also plastic pots that look like ceramic pots.  The advantage of them is that they're much lighter, and they can stand up to freezes.  The disadvantage of plastic pots of all typse is that they are not very stable in sunlight.  They start to fade after a season, and they can crack if exposed to direct sun.  Check your local garden center for decorative plastic pots.

Good growing!
