Drainage holes or not?

Question
Dear Sarracenia Northwest,
I would like to know what a difference a pot without drainage holes makes (in this example regarding temperate Drosera and Sarracenia)?
Does the standing water change the oxygen levels and acidity and so on?

Best,
Finn

Answer
Hi Finn,

We strongly advise not using pots that lack drainage holes.  These pots don't provide the appropriate soil aeration for healthy roots.  In some instance, pathogenic bacteria can grow as a result of soil stagnation.

You also mentioned temperate plants.  If you grow your plants outdoors, the pots can overflow and the soil may erode away during heavy rain.  This is another reason to use pots with drainage holes.

Good growing!
