Gtiing rid of Cactus

Question
We are buying a peice of land in East Texas. It is a pretty 8 acre piece of land but it is overrun by cactus.  We will build a house on the land and have small children who will run and play on the property.  We wish to totally eliminate the cactus population.  How is this best done?  There has to be thousands of them.  Is there an organization who might be interested in harvesting them for cosmetics or medicinal purposes? Thank you for any help you can give.

Answer
Dear K,

I don't know of any orginizations off hand that would take them, especially if they are that common. Probably the most effective way to get rid of them would be to bull doze the area you want cleared and scoop them up and haul them away. I would check your local ordinances first however. Here in AZ, most desert plants are protected ans can't be destroyed even if they are on your own land.

Hope this helps,

Sincerely,

Greg
