My cactus in a car wreck! Can I help it?

Question
Hi, Greg! Hope you can help me. 20 years ago my father brought me a cactus from the Arizona desert. We did not know if it would do well in SC but it has grown beautifully and has become rather large. Last night a woman fell asleep at the wheel and ran into my yard and broke off alot of the pieces. Is there any way I can reroot these to replant them and will the main cactus still in the ground heal on its own? I do not know what type of cactus it is- it is NOT the big tall kind with the two arms, it is the flat headed kind that gets flowers on it. THANK you so much for any advice.

Answer
Sondra,

Sorry for the delay in answering. Yes, you can, just let them heal completely (no soft area around the break). Just stick them in some soil and they will grow. Prickly pear cactus are one of the easiest to propagate, so you should have great success.

Sincerely,

Greg
