Replanting cactus

Question
I have a tall spiny cactus that has been growing for over thirty years. I have replanted the entire cactus into larger pots over the years. Currently, it has new growth at the top of the old stalks and there are even roots branching out. How do I break off and replant these sections since it is growing too tall for my ceiling. Previoulsy I tried to repot top shoot in the same pot with the original cactus, only to have these new shoots die. So, how should I proceed. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

Answer
Dear Debra,

It would be very helpful if I new what kind of plant it is. If you can send a picture, send it to: [email protected]

Or if not, a name would work too. That way I can determine the most successful way to grow the cuttings.

Sincerely,

Greg
