Gerber Daisies

Question
How do you prune the dead flowers?  My gerbers are not producing new flowers?  Do you prune from the top of the stem, right under the flower, or do you remove the whole stem?

Answer
Barbara,
Here is the general rule of thumb for deadheading:
If the stem under the old flower has leaves on it, cut the spent bloom just underneath the flower head, leaving the stem. You could also cut just above any of the leaves if that makes the plant look neater. If a plant is the sort to make more flowers after the first are cut off, it is from this place where the leaves meet the stem that the growth and new flowers will occur.  Zinnias and Marigolds are examples of plants that get deadheaded in this way.

If a plant has a straight stem with no leaves on it - your gerbers for example - then you cut the stem all the way down toward the base of the plant because if these plants are going to make more flowers the growth comes from the base or crown of the plant.

That said, Gerber or Gerbera daisies are famous for not blooming all summer because they are cool weather annuals. They stop blooming when the temperatures rise much above 72 degrees. If you keep them in morning sun and afternoon shade that might help, but usually they don't come into bloom again until the fall.

I hope this helps,
C.L.
