red leaf maple disease

Question
red leaf maple
red leaf maple
Just noticed the bark splitting and releasing from around the tree, and is covered with a white fungus.  It is about 10 years old, and has been a beautiful tree.  Can I save it?  Photos attached.

Answer
Jim:
The bark splitting has probably allowed the entry of microorganisms into the the tree interior through that wounded area. Looks like there are lichens growning around this area, but difficult to confirm.  Google lichens for som pictures to compare to. Lichens are not disease organisms.  We see them on trees that are decling for some other reason.  They are a result not the cause.

Overtime the tree may weaken structurally and perhaps fail during a wind or ice storm.  Fertilization and sufficient water are the only things you can do.  It is possible that this tree may last for several years, but it will probably continue to weaken.
