dying maple very old, big

Question
we have a maple tree on our property, and have several times had truckloads of rock delivered, driving over the roots.about four to five feet from the base. I didn't think anything of it , but now i'm thinking this may be the cause of the problem.
It is dying. last year it lost it's leaves early in the season. now this year only 2 branches have leaves on.  also the whose trunk has leaves growing out of it. so maybe it can be saved. we had a tree service out. they said they might be able to save it by inserting nutrients all over it. 50% chance he says.  for $500.00.
what should we do????

Answer
Save your $500.  Go buy a bag of tree fertilizer from Home Depot.  Then take a sharp metal rod about three or four feet in length and tap it into the ground about 4-6 inches deep all around the base of the tree.  You are aerating the soil around the base of the tree.  Then apply the fertilizer out to around the drip line of the tree.  Water adequately when dry.  Check the limbs to see if they are dead by scratching with a pocketknife.  If there is green underneath the bark, the limb is still alive.  If is is brown, it will be dead and should be cut off.  This is about all that can be done.  Good Luck.
