smell from yucca tree roots?

Question
we removed old roots from some yucca trees in the yard and there is an extremely foul odor.  the gardener informed me that the roots are all dead now and the smell will go away.
its been 2 weeks and the odor is awful.  how can I get rid of it.

Answer
I would re-visit the root removal process.  What you are smelling is most likely bacterial soft rot, much like what gets on potatoes in the bag inside the house.  The rotting process is usually very putrid and takes a long time for the smell to go away.  Make sure all of the roots are removed.  A few left behind is enough to ruin the smell in that area.  You can spray some bleach on the area and see if that helps.  A 1:5 solution is strong enough to kill any bacteria. Do not use the bleach around any plants.  Other than that, I can provide no other useful information.  Time will eventually fix the problem, but you may can speed that process up a bit.  Good Luck.
