what is eating my tree

Question
Hi,

I think my tree is dying. I just notice that something is wrong with my tree. There are holes all over the tree and saw dust all over the base of the. While I was taking picture of the tree I could hear noise coming from the tree. I also saw some bug that looked a lot like little bee going in and out of the little holes. Can still save my tree or is it to late?

Answer
If the foliage is still green you should be able to save it. Sounds like either a insect borer or if the tree is a conifer bark beetles. The trunk will need to be sprayed with an insecticide called Onyx or Merit. The trunk from the ground to as high as you can reach should be sprayed so that the solution runs down the bark. This should kill the insect in the bark. However IF the insect population is too large in the bark the tree may still die. It is worth a chance to save the tree. Spray as soon as possible. IF the foliage is turning all over there is a very slight chance that the tree can be saved.
Sorry!
