king sago

Question
We have a two foot king sago house plant here in Maryland in our east facing window.Plant is watered when dry and fed with palm-tone every three months. Some of the leafs are turning brown. Can you identify problem and help save plant?

Answer
Bruce:
These plants like a well drained soil, so be sure you do not overwater.  It is easy to do this on houseplants.  This overwatering can do many a plant in.  My schedule: I have one I bring in during the winter.  When it gets dry, I carry it outside on a warm day, add plenty of water- until it runs out the bottom of the pot.  Let it drain a few hours, bring it in and don't water until it gets dry again. These plants like sun too, so be sure it gets plenty.  Be sure it is not getting cold air currents from the window or around a door.
Check for scale insect.  These are small whitish round raised "bumps" that are about 1/8 inch diameter and often on the undersurface of the leaves.

Hope this helps
Steve
