Camillia

Question
Two camellias in front of my house have white powdery looking aphids underneath the leaves; they bloomed this year but most of the blooms were brown. We had unusual cold weather in Mississippi this winter. The white powdery "stuff" can be wiped off with a q-tip. What can I do to take care of my problem.

Thank you,
Jenenah

Answer
Jenenah:
These may be truly aphids such as "wooly aphids".  Use your computer in "Google Images" to look for these to see if this is what you have. If it is aphids, these insect can be controlled by a variety of insecticides- for example: BAYER ADVANCED TREE AND SHRUB INSECTICIDE (blue plastic bottle)that can be applied to the soil beneath. It contains the active ingredient called Imidachloropid.  It can last in the soil for a few months. That is an option.  There may be some contact materials available for a quick knockdown. Check with your local garden center for others.  Be sure to read the label on the container for mixing and using instructions.

You are welcome to send me a picture if you have any doubt after looking at some pictures on Google Images. If you do, get as close to the "things" as you can.  Be sure to review your photo on your computer first- to be sure it is in focus before sending.

Steve
