Bark-Applied Fungicides on Walnut: Why Propiconazole + Mancozeb Won't Work

Applying propiconazole + mancozeb with Pentra-Bark (bark penetrant) to large walnut trees for anthracnose and husk maggots is fundamentally flawed. Here's why:

Propiconazole: Injectable, Not Topical

• Registered as trunk injection (Alamo) for oak wilt, Dutch elm disease
• Xylem-mobile (acropetal only)—moves up with transpiration stream
• Bark spray + penetrant = unpredictable, minimal uptake, no phloem movement
• Anthracnose (Colletotrichum) infects leaves/fruit—propiconazole must be in leaves preventively

Mancozeb: Protectant Only

• Multi-site contact fungicide (FRAC M3)
• Zero systemic activity
• Weatherable residue on leaf surface
• Bark application = zero disease control

Pentra-Bark Reality

Bark penetrants (organosilicones, esters) enhance foliar uptake. Bark is dead, suberized tissue—no living cells to transport chemicals. Some cambial uptake possible but erratic, species-dependent, unregistered for this use.

Your Actual Problems & Solutions

Anthracnose on walnut:

• Resistant cultivars (if replanting)
• Sanitation: remove/destroy infected nuts/hulls/leaves
• Foliar fungicides (chlorothalonil, thiophanate-methyl, propiconazole as foliar spray) at bud break, repeat per label
• Improve air circulation via pruning

Walnut husk fly (maggot):

• Monitor with yellow sticky traps + ammonium acetate bait
• Spinosad (GF-120 NF Naturalyte) bait spray—weekly from hull split
• Kaolin clay (Surround) deterrent
• Sanitation: remove dropped nuts promptly

July fruit drop: Likely walnut blight (Xanthomonas) or nutritional (Zn, B deficiency). Soil + tissue test. Copper sprays at catkin elongation for blight.
