Birch Tree Problem

Question

Birch tree problem
I have a Whitespire birch tree that is about 16 years old and I just notice that one of the three tree spires has bark that appears to be breaking away from the interior of the tree (see image). I was wondering how to treat what I assume may be birch borer infection.

Answer
Michael:
This may be an indication of some level of decay within the interior. This decay is often associated with a variety of fungal and bacterial organisms.  The borer usually has some sort of entry/exit hole in the bark. From the looks of the image, I expect that the decay may have been in the tree for awhile. Some insects may actually serve to carry some of these decay organisms.

These decay organisms gain entry into the tree through some type of wound-- it may be insect, but very often it is made by equipment (lawnmowers or earth moving equipment) or even ice storms etc that may break branches.
Unfortunately, this decay is progressive and slow.  Good watering schedules and fertilization may prolong the eventual decline and failure.

Keep a close eye for breaking branches etc, then removal may be the best option.

Steve
