Pest? Rodent?

Question
I live in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
I have raised laid stone flower beds about knee high right off the front porch. Every year along the inside close to stone there are tunnels about the size of my arm or so. There is no evidence of moles, on top the ground, it's all under. Doesn't seem to be any holes where something may be exiting. (I have had these in for more then 10 years so it can't still be settling.)Every year I have to locate these tunnels and fill in more dirt.
I have three cats and and dog on my front porch most of the time but they have not seen anything or whatever it is would be gone, I'm sure. Could you give me some idea of what to try to get rid of this pest??? Thanks a bunch, Lisa

Answer
It sounds to me like you have moles.  Moles rarely come to the surface but will push up dirt in a line.
visit http://icwdm.org  click on solutions then animal damage id.  On that page will be a series of links that ask you questions tohelp you identify the culprit.

To get rid of moles, I recommend trapping. Information on trapping will also be found on that site. If you can't find it e-mail the webmaster, he will direct you to the specific page. Click around though. It is a large and very informative site filled with research based information and they aren't trying to sell you something.
