mole/mice problem

Question
Hello,
Help!  I have a problem with moles or possible mice.  The last several mornings I have come down stairs I have found droppings from what I am assuming is mice or moles.  The droppings are on the furniture as well as the floor.  The pantry has been disturbed.  I found a potato that has been chewed on in the middle of the kitchen floor.  This is grossing me out!  I have set mice traps but not successful.  The bait I have used is cheese and peanut butter.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I live in Hampton, VA.

Answer
Assumptions are dangerous things. Your first task is to determine what the droppings are. I seriously doubt you have moles. It is extremely rare to have a mole in a house. Shrews are more common and of course house mice extremely common.

Can't rule out rats as they would be neophobic (afraid of new things) Unlikely a shrew would have eaten the potato.
You need to 1. visit http://icwdm.org click on solutions then on inspection. click around to determine what the droppings are.
2. once you have a good idea of what the culprit is, determine how they entered the house. Information on inspection techniques is there. This will involve a lot of reading. If you don't want to read hire a pro. But learn how to find a real professional versus a wanna be by reading our tips on finding a true professional. Lots of quacks out there. You were warned.
3. read on how to control the creature. again info on our site. even if you hire a pro, read it so you can have a better idea if your pro really has a clue.

high res photos with scale of the droppings would also help. [email protected] we can handle 5 mg e-mails. But the real question is whether your end can.
