Insect infestation - Jacaranda Tree

Question
Tree is about 5 years old and trunk is 8" at base.  Tree is healthy and spring
bloom underway.    Bottom few feet of trunk has bark that is rough, loose, and
a bit wet.  Closer inspection shows small bugs and worms in loose bark.   Can
we treat?  How?
Thank you,

Dan

Answer
Unfortunately, both pests require different controls. If the worms are earthworms, they are beneficial and should not be treated. However, if they are inchworms or caterpillars, you want to treat the soil with BT, othewise known as Baccilus Thuringenitus. You can purchase this product at most garden centers under the brand name Dipel or MVP. You can also purchase it online through an organic control company such as Planet Natural or Gardens Alive.

The small bugs should be treated with an organic control called rotenone. You can purchase this in powder or liquid form. Just mix it in the soil according to the directions and it will eradicate the bug problem. All of these products are organic and therefore non-toxic to humans, pets, and the environment. I have attached several links to these products for your convenience.
