pine sawyer beetle

Question
My wife and I were watching TV when this giant beetle comes strolling across our living room carpet. I'm not afraid of bugs but this thing was huge! I trapped him in a glass and walked about a 1/4 mile down the road before i released him. We live in a mountainous area of San Diego and we do have a couple of pine trees on our property. my question is if there is one adult in your house or yard does that mean there are several more and if so how can I bug proof my house so that my wife doesn't threaten to move out?

Answer
Mike,

These beetles frequently emerge from firewood so the first suggestion is to leave the firewood outside until you are ready to burn it. The other way they get inside is through open doors and windows. The beetles pose no threat to your house and they don't bite or sting. I guess the short answer is there's no way to completely avoid these beetles short of removing all the pine trees from around the property. Post a follow up if you have questions.
