Growing berries in Hawaii

Question
Hi, Mack,

I was wondering what kind of berries would be okay to grow in Hawaii.  I was thinking of growing a berry bush in a large pot in my small patio where it gets the sun half of the day.  I like blueberries but thorny bushes like blackberries would be a good defense against slugs.

Answer
Dear Sean:

Blueberries are relatively new to Hawaii, yet my research indicates that many varieties are being tested for possible commercial growing.   Blueberries are often associated with cooler growing climates, but early tests on the Big Island are proving that the crop may have a future in Hawaii.  Blueberry plants require daily watering and proper fertilization.  The greatest pests of blueberries include disease and birds of the air that enjoy feasting upon them.  You will need netting to protect your crop from the birds! Blueberries are chock-full of good-for-the-body phytochemicals.  They are being studied for their potential to stall aging, boost brain power, lower cholesterol, and much more.  Recommend you research this site for guidance in planting and general care of blueberries:

Also, you may want to consider Goji berries which are very popular for their delicious taste and your tropical climate is ideal for them.  It thrives in hot, dry summer climates. The Goji berry is a native plant of Tibet. Recommend that you check this website for additional information about growing the Goji berries:

Best wishes for a great crop of berries!

Sincerely,
