How often is too often to fertilize bermuda?

Question
Charlotte,

I spread a fertilizer/weed control agent on my bermuda lawn maybe 4 weeks ago, and it really took off.  I am trying to reclaim my lawn after I really didn't take that good of care of it, and it appears I am making some headway.  However, I missed some streaks of lawn with the fertilizer, and those areas of course did not green up as much.  I want to spread some more fertilizer, but was worried I might be doing it too soon for the areas that DID get enough.

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Answer
Hi Matt;
That is the trouble with chemicals, you put a tad too much, and you can burn your ln beyond repair.
Organic is the best way to go. I use sugar, and you could use some now.
Fertilizers kill the beneficil microbes that enrich soil. Sugar or dry molasses keeps them alive.
they work round the clock all year long, enriching and improving your soil. Weeds don't like rich soil. they like poor soil.
When you get your soil rich enough, your grass stays green, and weeds won't thrive in it.
You could put zugar down now, and maybe recover some of the microbes.
I am very afraid if you put more fertilizer down, you will burn the grass that has greened up. not all of the fertilizer you put down has worked out of the soil yet.
Better to work on next year;s lawn.
Start with the organic program, and let the grass green up from what comes into it from the nearby soil.
Putting dry molasses or sugar down now, and again in the fall will start your lawn off next spring in good shape, only to get better.
No weed killers or other chemicals. what you put down that kills bad bugs also kills the good ones.
If you rid your soil of chemicals, you will encourage lizards, toads, grass snakes etc that thrive in your area, to make their home in your yard. they go where the food is.
You could wait for another 2 or 3 deep waterings, and then bring in some earthworms. they will greatly improve the soil.
I struggled with the chemicals and insecticides for over 50 years. I used weed killers until I learned from my vet they attracted cats, and the cats would eat it, and die an awful death. After that i pulled or dug out the weeds.
i learned about the sugr about 6 or 7 years ago, and my lawn is gorgeous nd weed free. It is greener than the other st.Augustine lawns and stays green longer in the fall, and greens up faster in the spring.
I could have saved myself all that labor (and my back), and a lot of money, and had a much better looking, weed free lawn all these years.
Organics is more about what you don't do, rather than what you do.
Now all we do is put soan sugar in the spring and fall, mow edge and water.
My lizards keep the aphids off my roses, and they and the toads and grass snakes eat all the bad bugs in my lawn.
No more grubs to battle. My critters do a much better job than the insecticides ever did, and no work for me.
Baking soda disolved in water and sprayed on my shrubs etc, keep down the molds and fungus better that the fingicides ever did.
The added benefit is my allergies and asthma are hardly a problem anymore.
I use 1 lb. sugar per 250-399 sq.ft.
I really recommend going with the organics.
