What are the natural repellants

Question
We also live in Texas and have brown spots really bad in our St augustine grass, someone told us that it was grub worm damage.  We have tried everything but it looks so sickly.  Can you help?

Answer
Hi Katherine;
Turn up a spadeful of dirt in that brown area, and look to see if there are grubs in there.
If you don't see a bunch of grubs, chances are is is Brown patch fungus.
For brown patch fungus, disolve about 1 heaping TBLSP ( about 4 teaspoonfuls) of baking soda per each gallon of water, and spray the area well.
Tug on some of the brown grass, and see if it comes right up, with hardly any to no roots, and kind of slimy. that is Brown patch.
You don't say where in texas you live, but there are Calloways nurseries all over the state. They have a degreed nurseryman at each location, and they can answer any question you have, and advise you on the best chemical treatments.
for organic, get Howard Garrett's book. He knows all that is wirth knowing about organic gardening in Texas, and Calloways carry his books, as do moct feed stores, if you don't have a calloways near enough to you.
also, go to Howard Garrett's website at

Write anytime you feel I can help.
