Replacing Wood CHips with sod

Question
Kenneth,
I live in Spruce Grove Alberta Canada and just have a quick question for you.
I was recently asked to replace a woodchip walkway at my condo with sod.
Under the woodchips i found some kind of geo tech fabric, can i just put topsoil on it, then sod? Or do i take the fabric off, then mix the soil?
If you can answer this it will be greatly appreciated.
Also, how much topsoil, and is late October too late in the year to lay sod ? The temperature today was 5C or 41F.

Answer
Make sure you remove all the wood chips first. You can lay soil over the fabric and then plant sod, but I would remove the fabric and mix the topsoil with some of the soil below.

You can lay sod as long as the soil is not frozen. It is getting a bit late, but if you have 4-6 weeks until freezing temperatures comes around, you should be fine. Make sure to water regularily until the sod has rooted.
