mushy water soaked lawn.

Question
During the winter and early spring months my yard is so soft you cant even walk on it let alone mow it. What is the best way to drain the water out of my yard. I'm thinking of re sodding it this winter.

Answer
Hi Vince;
You probably have clay a few inched down that will not let the water drain, or a layer of rock.
Adding enough soil to take care of the excepp water would do two things, give you deeper good soil to grow in, and raise the lawn so excess water can drain off into the street.
See how hard it is to get a shovel into the dirt.
See what it is under the good soil that is causing it not to drain.
If it is clay, you can till in a lot of bark mulch to loosen the soil, about a foot or more down.
Going on an organic program, and getting the healthy microbes etc into your soil will eventually improve the soil down so it is good soil far enough down to grow a good lawn, and take care of the excess water.
If raising the lawn causes soil to run off with the water, you can add a stone, brick etc wall. Don't mortar between the stones. The water will drain, but the retainer wall will hold in the soil.
