grass killed due to dog urine

Question
Hi There,

I am in of some serious help. I have 3 young shih-tzus- needless to say that I also have hardly any grass where they go. I am looking at trying to re-grow grass in that portion of the yard and am looking for advice on what to use? One issue that I am going to run into is that they are going to need to continue using that area while I am trying to get grass to grow. Help I no longer have a yard it is really more like dirt.

Thank you all in advance for your time and help.

I look forward to the advice.

Answer
Dear Wendy in PA with dirt (not Luci in the sky...):
I wonder if they have enough space to separate the lounging or active area from the waste area.  They may need some more space.
I would consider converting the waste area to a sand or mulch or other material without the expectation of grass.  Grass will not do well with the constant burning of urine.  If they respond to a sand bed or a mulch area, why not let them have it for use?  Clean up may be easier and they will use the same area out of habit.
Otherwise, the area must be protected from urine and sod is the quickest way to recover it.  Seeding will take too long to get the jump on your dogs.
