fescue and bermuda in same lawn

Question
Hey!  This past October we decided to lay bermuda sod in our backyard.  It was an year old yard with alot of dirt and some patchy areas of fescue and weeds (no tress).  We tilled and raked the yard smooth before laying the sod however, we did not spray roundup before laying the new sod.  We fertilized and watered (while you could still water yards) and now we have fescue growing up between the dormant bermuda.  What do you think is the best course of action by riding the yard of the fescue while maintaining the bermuda?  I know bermuda is aggressive and I'm assuming will take over the fescue but wanted your thoughts on the matter.  Thank you so much for your time.  Wanda

Answer
Wanda:

Yes, Bermuda is aggressive and will cover spaces between rolls layed contiguously or touching each other.

October was not the optimum time to lay the sod, however.  It has had no growth season since then.

Yes, Roundup will remove the weeds and fescue if applied when temperatures are in the 50 to 70 degree range when those plants are active.  You will have to apply it over several winters.  The weeds and fescue have dormant seeds in the soil which will sprout for years.  Consider a pre-emergent herbicide recommended by your local ag agent or garden center for this task.

I do not know where you are or what type of weather you have.  This response is accurate for mid-Atlantic states, where Bermuda is dormant and will not be in growth mode.

Best wishes.
