crab grass

Question
QUESTION: I have a 10 x 10 secrtion with tons of tiny new crab grass. Can I put top soil over it to kill and plant new grass or will it come through? If I can how many inches of top soil should I put on it?
Thanks,
Aloma

ANSWER:  Smothering the crabgrass with topsoil will not get rid of it and can even make the problem worse. It is better to remove the weed physically or chemically and then resod afterward.

QUESTION: What if I put black plastic on top for a couple of days to let the sun burn it, then put top soil on? Would that work seeing how the crab grass roots are so shallow? I'm not oppose to using round up but I want to plant right away.
Thanks,
Aloma

Answer
I doubt it. To begin with, you are probably thinking of 'Solarisation', using the sun to heat up the land to the point where pests and diseases will be 'cooked out' (about 140 degrees F). Clear plastic is preferable to black plastic for this purpose and the whole process takes weeks. You said that you need to plant right away.
