soil test results and grass problems

Question
Recently I had my soil tested by Clemson U. and it indicated that I have a pH level of 7.4 with a buffer ph of 7.90. My question is how do I lower the pH level to get it lower than 7 since the report stated that "plants do best in slightly acidic soil." The rest of the analysis indicated that the nutrients where in the area of "sufficient".

Also, with the report as it is, my grass (centipede) has turned brown and appears to be dying. Thanking you in advance for any/all help and advice. Terry

Answer
Hi Terry, I think you best bet is to locate a topsoil supplier who can provide a topsoil that has a pH around 6.0 or even slightly lower. You can then rent a core aerator, punch holes all throughout your lawn, and top dress it with an inch or so of the more acidic topsoil. Do this each fall, and you'll gradually lower the pH effectively. You should see a good improvement pretty quickly.

Good luck!
