Yellow zoysia grass

Question
8-29-09 gas company had to move gas lines and replaced zoysia lawn with zoysia sod in late June/early July.  We kept it watered and it seemed to accept transfer well.  Now however, it's turing yellow in the middle...edges still green/healthy looking.  Any idea what we should check?  We live in southern Indiana.
Thanks,
Sharon

Answer
Whenever a rut or trench is filled in and sodded it is normal to expect a discoloration. Sometimes it can last for months. Usually it is a deeper green than the surrounding turf because the fill subsides and the depression is more moist. In your case it seems that the trench may have been overfilled and a "crown" has resulted. This sheds moisture and can account for the lighter colored strip down the middle.
